melonflavored!
For those of you who also have Michael in your neighborhood, you may have been wondering what this is:
melonflavored is a website that I originally had the idea for years ago, but it was under a different name. My friend and I were like LOL LETZ MAEK A WEBSIET and it never went anywhere. But I had always wanted to make it all these years. The site was to be a gaming and anime review portal, basically.
Fast forward to about a month ago. I got the urge to make this site a reality again, except this time with a more broad Japanese scope, so I recruited Symon and we started the hunt for a name. It used to be bakagamer.net, but I grew tired of that name and I didn't want something so blatantly Japanese. And let's be honest; baka stopped being cool in middle school. The term "melon-flavored" is something I've been using for a few months now because I fucking love the melon flavoring in Japan. It started with my MySpace ("melon-flavored ARI?!") and then to my Vox ("another melon-flavored blog"). I even created a joke screen name a bit back (melon velz) and it just became a central theme for me.
Well, one day I was looking at my Vox and I read the title and it just fuckin' appeared in my mind.
"Oh snap, MELONFLAVORED."
I immediately called Symon and just said the word and he was like "...we have a website name. That's perfect." The name isn't blatantly Japanese like I mentioned before, but it's Japanese enough, and the kind of people that will visit the site will most likely know that melon flavoring is huge in Japan. If not, we'll have it on our About page. ;]
The project had officialy begun! We recruited Michael because he has the graphical skills (as you can see above) and he made this fucking gorgeous gem for our logo. If you check out his Vox, he's posted a couple wallpapers and a prototype layout.
So for clarification, melonflavored is going to be an overall gaming and Japanese pop culture review and information portal. That includes Japanese music, TV (anime and drama), movies, and whatever else we can throw in there. The site is going to have a focus on the main contributors and we're hoping to develop a relationship with the community based on our personalities. For example, someone would ideally be like "I could go to IGN to check out a review on SuperSweetGame 4, but I'll go to melonflavored because I love Ari's reviews."
We'll talk about it more as the project progresses. Next on the list is for the three of us to get together and create a design for the site, visual and coding. The domain (melonflavored.net) has been registered, so you can go check it out to see a teaser filler page. The logo resizes as you shrink the window!
